The Labor Ministry is modernizing its IT systems to provide better services to the country's huge workforce. Labor Secretary Sumita Dawra said on Wednesday that from 2025, EPFO ​​customers will be able to withdraw their provident fund directly from ATMs. Dawra said that we are working to speed up the processing of claims and simplify the process to make life easier. Claimants, beneficiaries or insured persons will soon be able to access their claims through ATMs with minimum human interaction.
Dawra said the systems are constantly evolving, and you'll see significant improvements every two to three months. We expect major upgrades by January 2025. The Employees' Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) currently serves more than 70 million active contributors. Dawra also highlighted the ongoing efforts of the government to enhance EPFO ​​services for ease of living. Regarding the extension of social security benefits to gig workers, Dawra confirmed that progress is being made but the timeline is on hold.
A committee comprising representatives of various stakeholders has been set up to propose a framework for providing social security and welfare benefits to gig and platform workers. Gig and platform workers were first defined in the Social Security Code, 2020, which was enacted by Parliament. The Code contains provisions relating to their social security and welfare. The Labor Secretary also addressed the issue of unemployment and highlighted that the unemployment rate has declined.
