'Muhammad' tops list of popular boys' names in UK for first time


For the first time, the name 'Muhammad' has risen to the top as the most popular name for boys in the UK. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released this new list after surveying the names of children in 2023. The British newspaper The Telegraph reported this news.

The name Muhammad has overtaken 'Noah' in the new list. The name Noah is in second place. The name Oliver is in third place in the 2023 ranking.

'Olivia' remains the most popular name among girls for the eighth year in a row. Second and third are 'Amelia' and 'Isla' respectively.

Every year the ONS analyzes the latest baby name data. The organization publishes the UK's most popular and unloved names.

In 2023, 4,661 babies named 'Muhammad' were born in England and Wales. In 2022 this name was 4 thousand 177 people.

In 2023, the number of children named Noah was 4 thousand 382. Last year the number of children with this name was 4 thousand 586.

Analysis by The Telegraph found that two of the fastest growing Arabic names for boys, 'Ayman' and 'Hasan', will grow by 47 per cent and 43 per cent in 2023.

A significant increase in Arabic names has also been seen among girls. 'Aizal' increased by 479 percent, while 'Inaya', which means care or protection in Arabic, increased by 48 percent.
