A 7-day ceasefire has been agreed upon amid the ongoing conflict in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. After government efforts, both the tribes fighting among themselves agreed to this. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to form a high-level commission to resolve the dispute between the two communities.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government spokesperson Muhammad Ali Saif said that the government has talked to leaders of both communities. After which it was agreed to hold a seven-day ceasefire and return the bodies and prisoners to each other.

The conflict began last week when a convoy of passenger vans was fired upon as Alizai (Shia) and Bagan (Sunni) tribes clashed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Kurram district. All these vehicles were going in a convoy from Parchinar to Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

So far, more than 64 people have lost their lives and hundreds have been injured in this three-day violence between the two communities. However, in some media reports the death toll is said to be more than 100.

More than half the population in Kurram is Shia Muslim.

Most of the population in Pakistan is Sunni Muslim. According to the New York Times, half of the population of 7.85 lakh in Kurram near the Afghanistan border is Shia Muslims. Because of this, communal tension persists between the two communities. Even on Friday, violence was more prevalent in those areas of the district where people of Shia and Sunni communities live nearby.

Terrorists became safe haven due to border dispute

There has always been tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan regarding Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Because of this, many terrorist groups use it as a shelter. A major reason for the terrorist incidents happening here is the lack of mutual consent between the two countries regarding the border area.

Actually, Pakistan and Afghanistan are separated by a border. This is called Durand Line. Pakistan considers it as the boundary line, but Taliban clearly says that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa state of Pakistan is its part. Pakistani Army has fenced here with barbed wire.

Upon occupying Afghanistan, Taliban asked Pakistan to vacate this area and uprooted the fencing here. Pakistan protested against this and deployed army there. After this the Taliban blew up the Pakistani check posts present there.
