Hasan Mahmood's journey in international cricket started in 2020, but his debut in Test cricket is this year. In just 8 months in the royal edition of cricket, he set one record after another. Hasan is now the highest wicket taker among Bangladesh pacers in a calendar year with regular wickets. Shahadat Hussain defeated Rajiv and this feat is now in his possession. Not only that, this pacer is also chasing the record of left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan.
Hasan has played 8 Tests so far in 2024. He guided three West Indies batsmen to the dressing room on the second day of the Antigua Test. The 25-year-old pacer now has 26 wickets in his 8-Test career. Earlier in 2008, Shahadat had made the feat of taking 23 wickets among the pacers of Bangladesh. Hasan broke that record after 16 years.
However, there are only two Bangladeshi bowlers ahead of Hasan in this regard. One is Shakib and the other is Taijul Islam. Shakib took 27 wickets each in Tests in 2010 and 2014. Hasan has three more innings ahead of him. If you can take two wickets there, you will surpass Shakib. However, in 2018, left-arm spinner Taijul has the record of taking the highest wicket among Bangladeshi bowlers in 7 Tests with 43 wickets. It is very difficult for Hasan to break this feat. However, the way you are performing, there will be no surprises in the near future.
Hasan still has a long way to go when compared to the world record. The world record for most wickets in a calendar year in Test cricket is held by Dennis Lillee. Australian pacer Lilley took 85 wickets in 13 Tests in 1981.
