The state party is going to the chamber court seeking a stay of the High Court's order to stop the operation of battery operated rickshaws in the Dhaka metropolitan area. Deputy Attorney General Noor Mohammad Azmi confirmed this on Sunday.
Noor Mohammad Azmi told Ajkar newspaper, 'We are preparing the application. There may be a hearing tomorrow.'
Earlier, on November 19, the High Court ordered the ban on battery operated rickshaws in the Dhaka metropolitan area. People associated with battery operated rickshaws have been protesting ever since. Allegations have been made that a group is trying to create chaos under the guise of the rickshaw pullers' movement.
The High Court directed to take steps to stop battery-powered rickshaws within three days of receiving the order.
The bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Shikder Mahmudur Razi passed the order on November 19 in view of the writ filed by the pedal-powered Greater Dhaka City Corporation Rickshaw Owners Union.
Barrister HM Sanjid Siddiqui appeared for the writ. Zahirul Islam Masum, President of Pedal Rickshaw Owners Union and General Secretary Md. Momin Ali filed the writ.
After the order, Barrister Sanjid Siddiqui told Ajker Patrika that pedal rickshaws have a provision to get a license from the city corporation. But there is no provision or law to license battery operated rickshaws. Writs were filed in 2013 and 2014 to obtain licenses for battery-powered rickshaws. However, the High Court dismissed both the writs at that time.
