Washington claims that the Biden administration made the decision out of concern about North Korean troops fighting in Ukraine on behalf of Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has long sought permission from the United States to use the 190-mile-range Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to strike inside Russia.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the use of US-supplied missiles on Russian territory would be a direct war against Russia by the US and its allies.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was clear the outgoing US administration wanted to escalate the conflict. They are 'adding fuel to the fire'.
Peskov also said that last September, Russian President Vladimir Putin clearly stated that allowing Ukraine to use long-range missiles would involve NATO in a direct war against Russia. Moscow will respond appropriately to the threats it faces. Putin also threatened to supply other countries with long-range weapons to attack Western countries.
The Biden administration has not commented on the decision. Biden has participated in the ongoing G-20 conference in Brazil. Russia rejected a peace proposal by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to end the Russia-Ukraine war at this conference on Monday.
Donald Trump, who is going to take office for the second term as the US president, has been in favor of ending this war from the beginning. However, there has been no official comment from Biden's camp on this decision.
Criticizing Biden's decision, X Trump's son Donald Trump Jr. aka Don Jr. wrote, 'Seems like they want to ensure the start of World War III, so my father can't make peace and save lives. They want trillions of dollars in profits, life care! Silly!'
On the other hand, some senior Russian officials hope that the Trump administration will cancel this decision of Biden by taking responsibility. Maria Butina, a Russian lawmaker, said the Biden administration was trying to complicate the situation. Hopefully, Trump will reverse this decision, because if it does, it risks starting World War III, which nobody wants.
