Donald Trump announces upcoming meeting with Colombian president at the White House
Donald Trump announced that he would receive his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, at the White House “in the near future”after a telephone call between the two leaders following repeated threats of American strikes in Colombia.

In front of the crowd gathered in Bolivar Square in Bogota, Mr. Petro assured that he was thinking of giving a speech “quite hard”but that he changed it after his telephone discussion with Donald Trump, which lasted at least an hour. The left-wing leader said he had asked his American counterpart that “direct communications between chancelleries and presidents” of both countries are restored.

Colombia and the United States are key military and economic allies in the region, but their relations have become strained in recent months. The American president notably described his counterpart as “drug lord” and of “thug”. The left-wing elected official responded by announcing that he wanted to file a complaint for defamation before the American courts.
Gustavo Petro also said, in his speech, that he spoke two days ago with the interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, that he invited her to Colombia and offered her a dialogue “worldwide” pour « stabiliser » the Venezuelan.
