Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, citing the highest ever employment generation of 4.5 crore in the automobile industry, said on Saturday that India's automobile industry will rank first in the world in the next five years. Addressing a program of vehicle dealers' body FADA here, Gadkari said the demand for Indian vehicles is very high globally. He said, “The size of the Indian automobile industry is now Rs 22 lakh crore. I am confident that within five years the Indian automobile industry will become number one in the world.”
Currently the size of the US auto industry is Rs 78 lakh crore, followed by China (Rs 47 lakh crore) and India (Rs 22 lakh crore). Gadkari said that when he took charge of the Transport Ministry in 2014, the size of the automobile industry was Rs 7.5 lakh crore, which has now increased to Rs 22 lakh crore.
He said at the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) event that the automobile industry has generated 4.5 crore jobs so far, which is the highest in the country. “The automobile industry is also giving maximum revenue to the state government and the Government of India as part of GST (Goods and Services Tax),” he said. He said that 50 percent of all two-wheelers manufactured in India are exported.
