New Delhi. Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy has emphasized the important role of the coal sector in the country's journey towards energy security and economic growth. Reddy stressed the indispensable role of coal in supporting India's development goals and sustainability initiatives. Chairing the meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Coal Ministry, Reddy briefed the committee members about the sustainable development activities adopted by the Coal, Lignite Public Undertakings (PSUs).
He informed the Committee members that environment protection during mining activities remains the main focus area for coal and lignite PSUs. He assured that these public sector undertakings not only ensure compliance with the statutory provisions mentioned in the environmental laws but also go above and beyond these requirements to maintain and enhance environmental standards in and around the mining areas.
The Minister reiterated the Government's commitment towards sustainable development and achieving the goal of net-zero emissions by 2070. Coal Secretary Vikram Dev Dutt said that coal, lignite PSUs are taking many sustainable and environment friendly initiatives in a planned and systematic manner. He reaffirmed the ministry's commitment to balancing the country's energy demands with climate goals.
