Future generations should be shown pollution-free rivers and canals: Environment Advisor


Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser on water resources and environment, forest and climate change, said that the current generation has not seen clean rivers and clean canals. We feel sad for the river, because we saw the clean river as a child. Addressing the present generation, he said, you have never seen a clean river, you do not know how it is when the river is clean, how much it is useful for people.

He said these things in the speech of the chief guest at the Rampura-Jirani canal cleaning campaign in Dhaka on Friday (November 1).

Earlier, Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan inaugurated the Rampura-Jirani Canal cleaning campaign organized by the Ministry of Water Resources and Youth Development Department of the Ministry of Youth and Sports at the Rampura Trimohini Eidgah ground in Dhaka on Friday morning. This program was taken as a part of 64 selected canals/water bodies cleaning campaign in 64 districts across the country on the occasion of National Youth Day-2024 celebration on November 1.

Adviser Rizwana Hasan said, the canal that will be cleaned by your hands today, may this canal remain clean in the future. But you have to take this responsibility as the leader of the future.

The advisor further said that today the idea of ​​cleaning 64 canals/reservoirs selected in 64 districts across the country came from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and this is the power of youth. He said that many people including Ministry of Water Resources, Water Development Board, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Department of Youth Development, Dhaka South City Corporation have participated in this canal cleaning campaign. The adviser said, those who say that there is no coordination between the government, but we have slowly proved it wrong. We have to unite for national interest. Today's canal cleaning campaign has started with great coordination – this is a big proof of that.

In the event, the Water Resources Advisor also said that we have undertaken the program to clean 64 canals in 64 districts, which will continue from today till November 15. He said, we will not end it, we will make one committee at each canal-centered local level. Those on the committee will see who is trying to dirty the canal again and they will be resisted there first.

Adviser also said in the event that those who own houses and shops around the canal, who think that the canal is your property and you have the right to pollute it, today the youth community is giving you a clear message that it is a national property and you have no right to spoil it. you don't have

Finally, Chief Guest Rizwan Hasan thanked the Ministry of Youth and Sports and said in his speech that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is doing this work in partnership with the Ministry of Water Resources. You who are volunteers, who are in the youth community, will do the work, considering this whole work as a national responsibility. He expressed optimism that these works will continue in the future. Adviser mentioned in his speech that we can show future generations pollution-free canals and pollution-free rivers, which is one of the themes of Youth Day today.

At the end of the program, the youth workers of voluntary and youth organizations were read the oath about the canal cleaning campaign.

It is to be noted that in the canal cleaning campaign which started from Friday in Dhaka, a total of 700 volunteers including 500 volunteers of BD Clean-C and 200 volunteers of Anchor Bangladesh are participating in the program at 14 spots of Jirani Canal. Besides, the youth workers of various youth organizations of the Department of Youth Development have participated in the cleaning campaign of Rampura canal. In the Rampura-Jirani canal cleaning campaign, volunteers and youth organizations as well as various NGOs, local government and administration, Dhaka South City Corporation, BIWTA, Water Resources Planning Organization WARPO, Bangladesh Water Development Board BWDB, Forest Department, Fire Service, trainees, self-employed-entrepreneur students- This cleaning campaign with the participation of youth and people. WORG-2030, an organization under the auspices of the World Bank, works as one of the partners in the canal cleaning campaign. Besides, the Dhaka District Civil Surgeon's Office cooperated with the canal cleaning campaign with medical teams.
