The National Citizens Committee demanded that the newly formed Election Commission should be rejected by terming the Election Commission as illegal, the existing law should be repealed and the Election Commission should be reconstituted with a new law. The speakers said these things at a press conference organized at the central office of the National Citizens Committee at Rupayan Trade Center of Banglamotor on Sunday (November 24).
Convenor of National Citizens Committee Nasiruddin Patwari, Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Spokesperson Samantha Sharmin and many others were present in the press conference.
The press conference said about the newly formed Election Commission, we are surprised by such a decision of the government on behalf of the National Citizen Committee and strongly condemn and strongly protest their action. Even today, the president of the fascist government remains in place. On behalf of the National Citizen Committee, we reject the election commission formed under the fascist legal framework under the illegal president and strongly demand the immediate repeal of the law along with the election commission and the formation of an impartial and uncontroversial election commission based on the new law.
National civic leaders said at the press conference that in 2022, the then illegal and fascist Awami League government had enacted a law to appoint election commissioners. That law of Awami government was rejected by BNP and other political parties. The Electoral Commission is also in favor of changing the current law. They have already drafted a new law which is in the process of being sent to the government. Due to the formation of the search committee, there is a dilemma whether this work will go ahead or not. The Reforms Commission was also not consulted before the formation of the search committee to form the EC. However, after the formation of the search committee, the reform of the recruitment act became unnecessary for the formation of the commission at this stage. Before setting up the search committee, it should have waited for the recommendations of the Electoral Reforms Commission.
Claiming that this government has already exceeded the scope and limits of the caretaker government after being in power for more than three months, they further said that this government was formed through a people's coup. So the government has to fully embrace the aspirations of the people. Dr. Yunus must remember, he is recruited by the student-mob. He is responsible to the people including the young student community.
If the political parties do not want, there will be no reforms, the National Citizens Committee does not want to hear such unwanted comments from the chief advisor, saying that students and people from all walks of life have fought with their lives to uproot the fascist structure of Awami. More than two thousand people were martyred, more than six hundred fighters lost their eyes, more than a thousand fighters received paralysis. We hope that the government which the students have put their lives in will act responsibly. People will not accept any decision against the spirit of popular uprising.
