Alternative for Germany candidate Robert Schnell in his speech compared the Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Manuela Schwesig with the Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, writes Bild.

The deputy suggested calling her “Manuela Lukashenko” and said that she should “go to Minsk as the minister of propaganda” because she dictates to the opposition “how many people can attend demonstrations.”

“I think Lukashenko is still looking for several people there,” Schnell said.

Schwesig is a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD, part of the ruling coalition with the CDU/CSU), and has been the head of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern since 2017. She is the fifth head of government since 1990 and the first woman to hold this post. Previously, she was Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Pensioners, Women and Youth – from 2013 to 2017 (third government of Angela Merkel). As one of the state representatives in the Bundesrat, Schwesig sits on the Foreign Affairs Committee. She also heads the German-Russian Friendship Group created by the Bundesrat and the Federation Council.

According to Bild, representatives of the SPD have been leading Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for almost 30 years, but recent polls show that the AfD is now leading in the region.

Early elections to the Bundestag took place in February last year, and the new parliament convened at the end of March. According to German law, new elections are held four years (46-48 months) after the first meeting (unless the Bundestag is dissolved).
