My Bangladesh (AB) Party has put forward 10-point proposals to strengthen and restructure the renewable energy sector.
Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad, joint member secretary of the party, presented these proposals in a press conference on what the government should do about the energy sector organized at the party's central office today.
At the press conference, Asaduzzaman Fuad said that Bangladesh is a river-fed region, so there is no alternative to renewable energy. There are many inaccessible areas, especially grasslands, island areas, mountainous areas, where it is not possible to serve the people of those areas from the main electricity connection. Apart from this, the whole world is moving towards renewable energy due to environmental complications.
He said, now the demand for electric vehicles is increasing rapidly to reduce environmental pollution. Overall, electricity demand may double in the next decade. As a result, foreign investors are very interested in many renewable energy sectors.
Highlighting 10 points at this time, he said that production should be started on the basis of 'no electricity, no pay' in all the projects which have received the work letter from the government. There is no opportunity to waste country's money in the name of capacity charge.
To reduce the cost of renewable energy, the government will build transmission lines and arrange electricity generation through open tender; To ensure the production of solar power from four chars of Islampur Upazila of Jamalpur funded by the World Bank for the production of 20 thousand megawatts of electricity; Conversion of diesel-powered irrigation machines to solar pumps; It is proposed to ensure power generation from rooftop solar by expanding net metering program through tripartite agreement with rooftop owner and investor company.
In addition to this, taking the initiative to produce electrified cars in a fast time; Reducing taxes to zero or minimum on essential products including solar panels, inverters used in the renewable energy sector; Rapidly increasing renewable energy production through 'feed and tariffs' by dividing Bangladesh into several regions; The team proposed to take steps to import low-cost hydropower from Bhutan and Nepal through dedicated transmission lines and store electricity at low cost during off-peak hours through battery storage for off-peak use, stable transmission system and power supply to grazing areas.
AB Party Dhaka Metropolitan South Joint Member Secretary Safiul Basar, Ahmad Barkaz Nasir, Kefayet Hossain Tanveer, Metropolitan North Joint Member Secretary Abdur Rob Jamil, Central Committee Member Moshiur Rahman Milu and others were also present in the press conference.
