World Leaders Disagree at AI Summit

AI is no longer just about technology, it is part of geopolitics and security. At work here is the race to overtake China on the one hand, and the need to keep pace with technology on the other. In a recent interview with BBC News, Sir Demis Hassabis, head of Google DeepMind, said, ‘More research into artificial intelligence or AI threats is urgently needed.’ He also said that the industry is now asking for a smart regulation or intelligent policy to deal with the real risks posed by this technology.

Not only that, many technology leaders and politicians at the recently concluded Delhi summit have demanded that AI should be brought under a global governance regime rather than being left to a single country. Meanwhile, while everyone is talking about regulation, the United States is opposing it. White House technology adviser Michael Kratsios has made it clear that they do not want such global control over AI.

The summit, which ended in Delhi, saw two clear polarizations among world leaders. UK, India and other countries favor the policy. British Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed on countries working together for AI security. According to them, ensuring safety is the first condition for public welfare. On the other hand, the United States is against the policy. White House technology adviser Michael Kratsios outright rejected global regulation.
