BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moin Khan said, Khaleda Zia is not just a political leader, she was a symbol of non-violent politics and a great statesman who was a real practitioner of democracy. His thoughts, work, skills and above all his love for people have brought him to this height.
Moin Khan said this at the condolence meeting organized by the Lawyers Association and the World Human Rights Organization Bangladesh at the National Press Club in the capital on Saturday (January 17) to seek the forgiveness of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
Moin Khan said, ‘I was wondering whether I am qualified to speak about the person you have invited me to speak about today. Begum Khaleda Zia’s huge personality, political wisdom, liberal mindset and her immense love for the people of Bangladesh cannot be talked about day after day.’
This member of BNP’s standing committee said, ‘Many times we are speechless when it comes to Khaleda Zia. Remembering his emptiness and contribution, the voice becomes hoarse. We don’t know how to express our feelings today.’
Referring to the cases filed against Khaleda Zia, Moin Khan said, ‘About 47 false cases were filed against her. Once I asked him, “Why do you go to court in these cases?” He said, “They may do wrong, but I cannot go beyond the law.” In these words, his respect for the law, moral firmness and statesmanlike mentality are revealed. This is why I strongly say – Begum Khaleda Zia was a great statesman who epitomized non-violent politics and a true practitioner of democracy.’
Highlighting the experience of his political life, Moin Khan said, ‘The context of the 1991 elections was an important time for Bangladesh. Khaleda Zia emerged as an uncompromising leader after the fall of the dictator through the mass movements of the 90s. Many people criticized his decision to boycott the elections in 1986 and 1988, but later it was proved that his decision was correct. As a result of this, the people elected him as the Prime Minister in the 1991 elections.
