At one stage of the hearing in the Election Commission (EC), the situation became heated when BNP candidate for Feni-3 seat Abdul Awal Mintu and NCP candidate for Comilla-4 seat Abul Hasnat (Hasnat Abdullah) got into a heated argument. It caused a commotion.
This ruckus happened during the hearing of the appeal against the validity of the nomination paper of Afroza Khanam, the valid candidate of Manikganj-3 constituency, due to dual citizenship on Saturday.
At this time, the EC wants an explanation from the senior lawyers present on dual citizenship. The lawyers continued to explain. At the end of the explanation, the commission adjourned the appeal hearing for half an hour at noon. Advocates for and against the appeal continued to gather in front of the dais after the entire commission led by the CEC walked out. At this time they got into an argument. BNP candidate for Feni-3 Constituency Abdul Awal Mintu, who was present in the midst of this tussle, expressed his anger towards the opposition present there (there was a hearing to cancel Mintu’s nomination papers on the charge of having dual citizenship).
At this time, NCP candidate Abul Hasnat (Hasnat Abdullah) who was present in the auditorium for the hearing of another appeal got excited. Hasnat Abdullah objected to Mintu’s expression of anger. The situation immediately heated up. At that time, when Mintu was taken away by the lawyers, his son Tabith Awal tried to calm him down by talking to Hasnat Abdullah. Later the law and order forces brought the situation under control.
When the hearing resumed after an adjournment, Hasnat Abdullah presented the complaint to the commission. He said that BNP candidate Mintu abused in inaudible language. …Bloody Citizen also attempted abuse and violence. At this time, this NCP leader demanded a ruling from the EC. At the same time, supporters of another lawyer, Fahim Chowdhury, a BNP candidate for a seat in Kishoreganj, accused his client of beating up his client in front of the election hall after the hearing on Friday (January 16).
Then election commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Machoud said, ‘We have heard the incident. We call it desirable. Hopefully, no one will do such an incident again.’ At that time, he suggested filing with the Election Investigation Committee for the incident.
