ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) plans to make 70 per cent of its production ‘green’ (eco-friendly) by FY27, in line with the Green Steel Taxonomy launched by the Central Government. The Center had last December introduced the taxonomy for green steel, which is expected to be rolled out in FY27. This move is expected to promote decarbonization of the country’s steel industry and boost demand for green steel in India and abroad.
Green steel is classified based on the emissions intensity of the steel plant where it is produced. To qualify as ‘green’ the carbon emission intensity must be less than 2.2 t CO2/TCS. Steel with emissions intensity above this limit will not receive a green rating, while steel produced below this will be rated on a three-tier system – three-star, four-star or five-star green steel.
With India’s new Green Steel Taxonomy expected to be implemented in FY27, AM/NS is confident in its ability to lead the Indian Green Steel Industry. The company had achieved an intensity of 2.17 TCO2/TCS in FY23, which is 14 per cent lower than the national average. Ranjan Dhar, Director and Vice President (Sales and Marketing), AM/NS India, said that the company has managed to reduce its carbon emission intensity by more than 35 percent since 2015.
