The GST Council meeting was announced a few days after the announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech in which he said that people are going to get a huge gift on Diwali and the government has started a major improvement in GST.

The 56th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council will be held on 3-4 September, in an official memorandum on Friday. In an official memorandum issued by Arvind Srivastava, Secretary, Government of India and ex -officio Secretary of GST Council, it is said that Adhochastri is directed to refer to the above subject and inform that the 56th meeting of GST Council will be held on 3 and 4 September 2025. GST Council is a constitutional body which is responsible for making recommendations on issues related to the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India.

According to government sources, the central government had proposed to abolish the then 12 percent and 28 percent GST rates and maintain only 5 percent and 18 percent GST rates. Government sources said that under this initiative, 99 percent out of 12 percent of slabs were proposed to be transferred to 5 percent slab, and 28 percent of the 28 percent of the slab items were proposed to transfer items to 18 percent slab.

He said that consumer goods with a rate of 28 percent are proposed to be transferred to slabs with a rate of 18 percent. He also said that a new rate of 40 percent is proposed for harmful items like tobacco and paan masala. The initiative is in line with the announcement made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech on Friday in his speech on the occasion of Independence Day, in which he said that people are going to get a huge gift on Diwali and the government has started “a big improvement in GST”.
