Russian President Vladimir Putin has a meeting with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. Sheikh Tamim said at the Kremlin in Moscow on Thursday (April 7th) that the new Syrian new leadership was interested in strengthening Moscow's relationship. British news agency Reuters reported.
Putin is trying to maintain the use of two Russian military bases in Syria and maintain its strategic impact in the region. This attempt was made urgent after the fall of Russian ally Bashar al-Assad last December. Assad was overthrown by the rebels and Ahmed al-Shara took over as the new president.
Sheikh Tamim told Putin that in the context of Syria, President Al-Shara was in Qatar a few days ago. We talked to him about the historical and strategic relationships of Syria and Russia. He is interested in building relations between the two countries on the basis of mutual respect.
Putin said the tension in Syria is very important in recent weeks. We want Syria to survive as an independent, sovereign and integral state. We also want to discuss with you on the possibility of assisting the people of Syria, especially humanitarian assistance. There are political, security and economic problems.
The two leaders also discussed the situation in Gaza. Qatar played an important role in the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza last January. Although the three -step agreement was signed, Israel started attacking Gaza in March. Negotiations for a ceasefire reinstatement have not yet reached a solution.
“We made an agreement with Gaza a few months ago, but Israel did not comply with that agreement,” Sheikh Tamim said. As an intermediary, Qatar will try to reach a solution to reduce the misery of the Palestinian people by coordinating between different parties.
Putin Sheikh told Tamim, “We know that Qatar is playing an important role in solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” Unfortunately, the initiatives of you, including you, have not been implemented. Innocent people are dying in Palestine, which is a tragedy of the present.
Two leaders have also been discussed on the efforts of Ukraine to end the war. Qatar has taken several initiatives to mediate between Russia and Ukraine. In addition, Qatar has also helped to bring the children back to the families of both countries, which are separated in war.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to end the Ukraine war. But no progress has been made yet. Moscow says peace agreement is not easy.
