An unelected government cannot rule the country for long: Mirza Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir commented that an unelected government cannot rule the country for long.

On Saturday (December 28) at the Abdus Salam Hall of the National Press Club, a discussion was held on the initiative of the National Democratic Party (ZAGPA) to protect the independence and sovereignty of the martyred President Ziaur Rahman, the promulgator of multi-party democracy, and to resist all conspiracies by uniting everyone in the spirit of the 24 student uprising. He said this in the speech of the chief guest in the meeting.

Mirza Fakhrul said that reform is not a new trend. If someone claims that we are the first to bring reforms, then it is wrong. Reform is an ongoing process. Reforms are taking place every moment. Reforms will continue. Elections cannot be stopped for that reason. We cannot let an unelected government run the country day after day. That is why we want early elections.

He said, a wrong interpretation is given about us, that is – BNP is seeking early elections to come to power. But we were in power before. I was there two or three times. God willing, I will come back to power. We do not do politics for power.

BNP Secretary General said that the reform process was first started by the martyred President Ziaur Rahman. Awami League established a one-party system. From there, Ziaur Rahman brought out multi-party democracy.

The chief adviser of the interim government. Addressing Muhammad Yunus, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, you have done six commissions. Those commissions are working. But who are these commissions working with? They brought some learned men. We respect them. But, what the people want, you go to the people, know what they want.

Addressing the interim government, he further said, we have said that you should reform, we have no objection. But the biggest problem in Bangladesh is instability. Having an elected government will reduce this problem a lot. Because the power of the elected government is different. People are behind him. We must always remember this.

BNP Secretary General said, we want reforms. We want reform the most. But, power should not remain in the hands of an unelected government for a long time. Today the crisis is increasing. The biggest crisis is common people. The price of everything has increased to such an extent that the life of the common people has become unbearable. They (interim government) do not care about it.

Mirza Fakhrul also said that you are the interim government. If you want to reform, reform. Also make an election, which will be acceptable to all. This is the main task. Power should be transferred to the elected government. Political parties are not your (interim government) opponents. Political parties are supporting you.

Chairman of Jatiya Gontantric Party (JAGPA) Bir Muktijoddha Khandkar Lutfar Rahman and moderated by general secretary Zakir Hossain Riaz, the head of 12-party alliance Mustafa Jamal Haider, advisor to BNP Chairperson Amanullah Aman and many other leaders were present in the discussion meeting.
