This Japanese NGO received the Nobel Peace Prize for 2024, working on 'a world free from nuclear weapons'

Nobel Peace Prize 2024: Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2024. This NGO is working on 'a world free from nuclear weapons'. According to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, the organization is “making efforts to create a world free of nuclear weapons and to show through witnesses that nuclear weapons should never again be used.”

Nihon Hidankyo is an organization of survivors (hibakusha) of the atomic bomb attacks. It has been trying to make the world aware of the dangers of nuclear weapons for decades. Hibakusha have been sharing their horrific experiences when atomic bombs were dropped by the US on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan during World War II.

Norway Nobel Committee Chairman Jorgen Vatne Fridnes announced the award to the Japanese organization on Friday, saying that “there is pressure on the consensus on the prohibition of the use of nuclear weapons” and therefore the award is being given to this organization. He said the Nobel Committee “wants to honor all survivors who, despite physical suffering and painful memories, have chosen to use their experiences to create hope and engagement for peace.”

Efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons have been honored by the Nobel Committee before. The 'International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons' was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2017 and the Joseph Rotblat and Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs in 1995 were founded to 'reduce the role of nuclear weapons in international politics and eliminate such weapons in the long run. Was awarded for his efforts to eliminate. Last year, Nargis Mohammadi, an imprisoned activist who has been fighting for years for women's rights, democracy and against the death penalty in Iran, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

This year's Nobel Peace Prize has been announced at a time when there is devastating conflict in many parts of the world, especially in West Asia, Ukraine and Sudan. The founder of the prize, Alfred Nobel, stated in his will that the award be given “for greater work or best work for fraternity among nations, for the abolition or reduction of armed forces, and for the organization and promotion of peace conferences.” Should go.

Amid the ongoing conflict in some parts of the world for the past year, there was speculation that the Norwegian Nobel Committee would not announce the prize this year. It is notable that the Nobel Prizes in Medicine, Physics and Chemistry are awarded many years after the publication of scientists' work so that the impact of their research can be fully measured. Conversely, the Peace Prize has sometimes been awarded to politicians and world leaders too soon, leading to criticism.

What is Nobel Prize?

The Nobel Prize is one of the most prestigious and respected awards in the world, given every year to individuals or organizations who have done remarkable work for the benefit of humanity. This award is being given since 1901 as per the will of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish scientist, inventor and inventor of dynamite.

Nobel Prizes are awarded in six fields:

Physics

Economics – The prize has been awarded since 1969 and was established by the Swedish Central Bank, following the will of Alfred Nobel.

Nobel Prize winners are awarded a medal, a certificate and a certain amount of cash.
