Formation of advisory council committee to make recommendations


In view of labor dissatisfaction, the government has formed an advisory council committee to review the labor and business conditions of the industrial establishments of Beximco Industrial Park and make recommendations. The Cabinet Department has issued a notification to form this committee by convening Shipping and Labor Adviser Brigadier General (Retd.) M Sakhawat Hossain.

Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Industry Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, Trade Adviser Sekh Bashir Uddin and Chief Adviser's Special Envoy for International Affairs Lutfe Siddiqui have been made members of the committee.

Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority, Finance Secretary, Commerce Secretary, Labor and Employment Secretary and Administrator of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association have also been placed in the committee as support to the committee.

The Advisory Council Committee has been asked to recommend immediate, mid-term and permanent solutions to resolve the labor grievances of the Beximco Industrial Park establishments.

Apart from Beximco, this committee has also been given the responsibility of determining what to do to ensure the working environment of such institutions. The committee can co-opt members if necessary. The Ministry of Labor and Employment will provide secretarial support to this committee.

The executive director of the Central Bank on November 10 in the leading industrial group Beximco Group by order of the High Court. Bangladesh Bank appointed Ruhul Amin as receiver. The receiver is entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring the sound management of all the institutions of this group.

Earlier on September 5, the High Court had ordered the central bank to attach all the properties of Beximco Group and appoint a receiver for six months to manage them.

However, the Appellate Division partially stayed the High Court's order to appoint a receiver in Beximco Group. According to that order, the appointment of receiver has been suspended in the case of Beximco Pharmaceuticals Limited.

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's private industry and investment adviser Salman F Rahman is the vice chairman of Beximco Group. He is now imprisoned after the fall of the Awami League government in a mass uprising by the students.
