Does the government really want to keep people's trust: Tariq Rahman's question

Expressing doubts about the role of the three-month-old interim government, acting chairman of BNP Tariq Rahman said, 'Some decisions of the interim government seem to be not paying attention to public wishes. They may want to impose what they think is good.'

He said this in a virtual chief guest speech at the Nationalist Textile Engineers Association of Bangladesh (JTEB) Council at the Engineers Institute in the capital on Saturday afternoon.

Addressing the interim government, he said, 'People still want to trust this government despite many shortcomings. But the question is – does the government want to keep the people's trust?'

Addressing the government, he said, 'It is not possible to remove the mess of 15 years in three months. But it is not unfair to question the success and failure of the government after three months. One thing the interim government needs to remember is that it may not be possible for them to fulfill all the demands of the people. But if inefficiency is observed in the administration of the government, the people will simply not accept it. If the priority selection is wrong while doing the work of repairing the state, then it will be considered as inefficiency of the government by the people.

Urging the interim government to gain people's trust by establishing the right to vote, Tariq Rahman said, 'The main tool of a citizen is the right to vote. Without the right to exercise this right, there is no relationship between the citizen and the state. When the people understand that this interim government is really working to establish the right to vote, the relationship with them will naturally strengthen.'

Commenting that 'if this government fails, democracy will fail', Tariq Rahman said, 'The failure of this government is the failure of all of us. Fallen autocrats and their cronies are not sitting around trying to make the government fail. But they are trying to make this government fail.'

He said, if the government has close trust with the people, the conspirators will not get the opportunity to spread the conspiracy. If the government takes into account what the people want, then the conspirators will not get a chance.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said in the special guest speech at the event, the challenge is not only of the interim government. This is a challenge for the government that will come in the future.

He said, we are going through difficult times. We must pass this time with caution. At this time, BNP must lead and achieve success.

Fakhrul urged the interim government to create a suitable environment for elections after the necessary reforms. He said, 'I want to say clearly – the main desire of the people of the country is a democratic government. The more time passes, the more the problem becomes. It will be beneficial for the people of this country to go to the elections very soon.'

He also said that we have continued and will continue to fight for the restoration of democracy in the country. We must take care not to fall behind in this fight.

BNP Standing Committee member Abdul Moin Khan, AZM Zahid Hossain, Vice Chairman Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Advisor to the Chairperson Abdus Salam, Farhad Halim Donor etc. spoke on the occasion. Jeteb President Engineer Fakhrul Alam presided over the event.
