Nobel laureates for medicine are selected by the Nobel Assembly of Karolinska Institutet Medical University, Sweden. The winners receive prize money of 11 million Swedish crowns ($1.1 million).
Two American scientists Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun have been announced to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for the year 2024. Both these scientists discovered micro RNA. Scientists Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun have won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of microRNA and its role in gene regulation, the prize-giving body said on Monday.

The Nobel Assembly said the two scientists have discovered microRNAs that are proving to be fundamentally important to the way organisms develop and function. The statement said their discovery is important in understanding how organisms, including humans, develop and function. It is a small molecule that plays an important role in regulating gene activity.
A total of 227 winners in the medical field have been awarded the Nobel Prize so far, out of which only 13 women have received this award. The winner of this award is given 11 million Swedish krona (about 1 million US dollars). This award is given in the name of Swedish scientist Alfred Nobel.
The laureates are invited to be presented with the awards at a ceremony held on 10 December, the anniversary of Nobel's death. Apart from the medical field, Nobel Prize winners will be announced in the field of Physics on Tuesday, Chemistry on Wednesday and Literature on Thursday. The Nobel Prize for Peace will be announced on Friday and the Nobel Prize for Economics will be announced on October 14.
Like every year, the Medicine Prize is the first in the series of Nobel Prizes, the most prestigious awards in the fields of science, literature and humanitarian endeavours, while the remaining five awards will be announced between October 7 and 14. Created in the will of Swedish dynamite inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel, the prizes have been awarded since 1901 for achievements in science, literature and peace, with economics added later.
The 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to Catalin Carico and Drew Weissman. Both of them were honored for their discoveries that led to the development of an effective mRNA vaccine against COVID-19.
