The US is not considering returning the nuclear weapons that Ukraine gave up after the collapse of the Soviet Union. White House National Security Adviser Jack Sullivan said this on Sunday (December 1). British news agency Reuters reported this news.
When asked about a New York Times report last month, Sullivan said some unnamed Western officials suggested US President Joe Biden could arm Ukraine before he leaves the White House.
He told the American press ABC, “It is not under consideration. no What we are doing is enhancing Ukraine's various conventional capabilities without giving them nuclear capabilities, so that they can effectively defend themselves and defeat the Russians in a war.'
Last week, Russia said the idea was nothing more than “absolute madness” and that one of the reasons Moscow sent troops to Ukraine was to prevent such a scenario.
Kiev inherited nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union after its fall in 1991. However, the country submitted them under the 1994 Budapest Memorandum Agreement in exchange for security assurances from Russia, the United States and Britain.
