Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz has withdrawn his nomination for the post of US Attorney General. He announced this decision in a post shared on social media yesterday local time. This information is known from the report of American broadcasting media CBS.
Last week, US President-elect Donald Trump nominated Gaetz to lead the Justice Department. However, Matt Getz said that he has decided to step down from this position so that the work of the new administration will not be disrupted due to the nomination controversy.
Getz said in his post, 'There is no point in wasting time arguing in Washington. The Trump administration's Judiciary must be effective from day one. I am therefore withdrawing my name from the nomination of the Attorney General.' He also said, 'I believe that President Trump will protect America and be the most successful president in history. I am honored to be nominated by him.'
Since Matt Gaetz was nominated by Trump, the issue has been hotly debated. Getz was under investigation for sexual assault and drug abuse. However, he claimed these allegations as 'false' and 'conspiracy'.
Getz claims that Kevin McCarthy, the former speaker of the lower house of the US Congress, is behind these allegations. Last year, Gaetz led a resolution to oust Kevin McCarthy as speaker, which at the time created a major divide within the Republican Party.
President Trump has not commented on Matt Gaetz's resignation. But Getz's decision is seen as positive, as it is expected to help advance the new administration's priorities.
Despite withdrawing from the nomination, Gaetz said he will always support the Trump administration and put the country's interests first in any situation.
