The United States is leaving the World Health Organization

The country's 47th president, Donald Trump, has ordered the withdrawal of the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO). He signed an executive order to leave the agency on Monday (Jan 20) on his inauguration day, citing its failure to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic and other global health threats. British news agency Reuters reported this.

Signing an executive order shortly after his inauguration, Trump said, “The WHO has broken the jackal on our heads, so have others for so long.” But these will not be allowed to continue.

He alleged that WHO has failed to act independently free from undue political influence of member states. In addition, the agency takes too much money from the United States, unjustifiably and unilaterally. However, the amount of money demanded by a large economy like China is much less than that of the United States.

Reuters did not receive a comment from the WHO on Trump's decision.

In his first term, Trump tried to withdraw the United States from the WHO. He accused the organization of helping China to fool the entire world on the issue of the Covid pandemic.

The United States is the largest financial contributor to the WHO. Uncle Sam contributes about 18 percent of the organization's funding. With the decision to withdraw from the WHO, within the next twelve months the USA's membership will be formally terminated, as well as this huge amount of funding.

Experts say that the organization has various important programs going on around the world. For example, finding ways to check and cure serious diseases like tuberculosis, AIDS etc. and other health threats. If the US withdraws from the WHO, the future of these programs could be at risk.

According to Trump's order, the relevant officials will discuss the process of canceling the pandemic agreement with the WHO during the withdrawal phase. US government officials working in the agency will be repatriated and given new responsibilities. And the government will find alternative partners to WHO to work on global health issues.
