Security has been beefed up at the Bangladesh Sub-High Commission in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. On Friday, additional security personnel were deployed around the High Commission, CCTV surveillance was also increased. Besides, petrol vans of strike unit and police control room have also been sent there. The initiative has been taken after a policeman was injured in a protest march by Bengali Hindu Jagran Manch last Thursday.
According to the report of the Indian media Times of India, plainclothes police have also been deployed, so that there is no sudden protest near the diplomatic mission of Bangladesh. After the Bangladesh government raised concerns about the protests in front of the Deputy High Commission in Kolkata, measures were taken to increase security.
“Although the situation appears to be currently under control, there is a sense of insecurity among all members of the Sub-High Commission,” a Bangladesh government statement said. It further said, 'The Government of Bangladesh strongly condemns the desecration of the national flag of Bangladesh and the despicable act of burning the effigy of the Hon'ble Chief Adviser.' It requested the Government of India on behalf of the Government of Bangladesh to ensure the safety and security of the personnel of the Bangladeshi Missions and to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
Meanwhile, around 15-20 additional security personnel arrived on Friday to ensure the security of the Deputy High Commission. The work of increasing the number of CCTV cameras around the High Commission from 18 to 22 has started. Petrol vans are stationed near the office. Additional guard rails have also been installed for added safety. Members of the local police and special branches have been directed to ensure that no protest or celebration is held in the area.
Earlier, special instructions were given to police units after a policeman was injured during a protest rally last Thursday. So that no agitator, especially those protesting suddenly, could breach the security cordon.
The Special Branch has been asked to gather intelligence in this regard. Kolkata Detective Police Office Lalbazar information says, 'Its purpose is to prevent disturbance of peace here and to ensure that the safety of diplomats is never in jeopardy.' “We have deployed plainclothes police in Newmarket, Park Street and Mukundapur to maintain peace,” said a senior detective police official.
On the other hand, Kolkata Police and West Bengal Police have started removing fake and offensive videos circulating on social media. In this regard, a police officer said, 'Many old videos are being promoted as new ones. Many videos are coming from other places. As of July and August, there is still a dedicated team working on social media.'
Cyber law expert and special prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee said, 'In the last three days there has been a massive spread of organized fake news on social media. The law imposes strict restrictions on the ethics and legality of social media posts and the responsibilities of various intermediaries.'
