113 seats required for majority

There are 225 seats in the Parliament of Sri Lanka. The figure of 113 is necessary for majority. It is very important for President Dissanayake to get majority in this election. President Dissanayake can implement important policies of the government only after getting approval from the Parliament.

At present his party has only 3 MPs in Parliament. According to local media reports, Dissanayake may get an absolute majority in the elections.

Parliamentary elections were last held in Sri Lanka in August 2020. In such a situation, new elections were to be held next year but after winning the presidential election in September this year, Anura Kumara Dissanayake dissolved the Parliament. Dissanayake promised to reduce the power of the acting President

According to the Sri Lankan Election Commission, 8,821 candidates have tried their luck in the parliamentary elections. Voters directly elect 196 members to Parliament from 22 constituencies under the system of proportional representation. The remaining 29 seats are distributed according to proportional vote.

The party gets a share in 29 seats according to the number of votes it gets in the elections. A voter can vote for 3 candidates on the basis of priority.

According to Al Jazeera, President Dissanayake believes that the power of the country is largely under the 'Acting President'. They have entered the elections with the promise of reducing this power, but they will need changes in the Constitution. They need two-thirds of the seats for this. Dissanayake is appealing to the public to win this many seats.

The post of executive presidency in Sri Lanka first came into existence in 1978. Since then it has been criticized, but after coming to power till now no party has tried to destroy its power.

Dissanayake has promised to curb corruption and improve the deal with the IMF during the Ranil Wickremesinghe era.
