Russia not interested in protecting Assad: Trump

Newly elected US President Donald Trump said that Russia was not interested in protecting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Thus ended his rule. In a post on the Truth social platform on Sunday (Dec 8), he said Moscow should never have defended Assad and that Ukraine had lost interest in Syria because of the war. British news agency Reuters reported this news.

Trump wrote, Assad is gone. He fled his country. His protector Russia, Russia, Russia—Russia led by Vladimir Putin—was no longer interested in protecting him.

He also said that Russia had no reason to be there. They have lost all interest in Syria because of Ukraine… a war that should never have started and could go on indefinitely.

Trump said Russia and Iran, Assad's main backers, are currently in a weak position. He noted that Russia is weak because of Ukraine and a bad economy. And Iran is weak because of Israel's successful resistance.

Trump will take office on January 20. He promised a quick end to the war in Ukraine. On Saturday, he met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris. Both attended the re-opening of Notre Dame Cathedral there.

Trump said both Russia and Ukraine have suffered heavy casualties on the battlefield. Ukraine also lost many civilians. He added that the Ukrainian leader wants to make a compromise and stop this madness. There should be an immediate ceasefire and a negotiated solution should begin.

In his post, Trump addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin and said, “I know Vladimir well.” It's his time. China can help. The world is waiting.
