Russian troops are making great progress in eastern Ukraine. They are currently moving at the fastest pace since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. In the last month it has occupied an area half the size of London. Some analysts and war bloggers reported this information on Tuesday in the news agency Reuters report.
According to the report, in early 2022, Russian troops occupied large areas of Ukraine. Later, however, they retreated east and south as Ukrainian forces counterattacked. Then this front line which is about 1000 km long was almost stagnant for the last two years. But recent small-scale developments, beginning last July, have changed the status quo.
The war is entering what Russian and Western officials are calling its most dangerous phase. Russia is believed to be using North Korean troops in Ukraine, and Kiev is launching counterattacks inside Russia using Western missiles and ammunition.
Moscow and North Korea—neither side has confirmed or denied the troop presence. Last week, Russia launched an attack on Ukraine using a medium-range hypersonic missile. Ukraine said on Tuesday that Russia had carried out its largest ever drone strike.
In a report, the Russian news agency Agenstav said, “Russia has set a new record in capturing territory in Ukraine.” It noted that last week, Russian troops occupied an area of about 235 square kilometers of Ukraine, which is the record for the most territory occupied in one week in 2024. An agency called Deep State, which analyzed battlefield footage and frontline maps, said Russian forces had captured 600 square kilometers of territory so far in November.
Meanwhile, Russia's Defense Ministry said its forces captured the strategic village of Kopanki, north of Kupansk in the Kharkiv region. It is located north of the main battlefield in the Donetsk region and is currently another important center of Russian military activity.
Ukraine's 3rd Assault Brigade reported on its Telegram channel on Monday that it had liberated the village from Russian forces. Ukrainian forces have repelled Russian advances in Kupansk, Kharkiv region, Ukrainian media reported, citing Nazar Voloshin, a spokesman for the Khartitsiya group.
Pasi Paronien, a military analyst at Blackbird Group, a Finnish military analysis firm, said Russian forces occupied an area of approximately 667 square kilometers this month. However, he noted, this number may also include some occupied territories in October.
Russia currently controls 18 percent of Ukraine. This includes all of Crimea, more than 80 percent of the Donbass, more than 70 percent of the southern Zaporizhia and Kherson regions, and about 3 percent of the eastern Kharkiv region.
