Priyanka Gandhi is one of the heirs of India's famous Gandhi family. This is the first time he participated in any election. He is going to fight in the first election of his life. Priyanka is ahead by 3 lakh 90 thousand votes so far in the Wanad seat vacated by brother Rahul Gandhi.
According to Indian media NDTV, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi has already crossed the margin of victory in the by-election to her brother Rahul Gandhi's seat in Wanad, Kerala state. He is leading in the parliamentary by-election by a margin of more than 3.9 lakh votes. Earlier, Rahul Gandhi won the election from two seats in the Lok Sabha elections. One of which was Wanad. The Wanad seat fell vacant as Rahul Gandhi retained the Rae Bareli seat for him. His sister Priyanka sat in that seat.
Rahul Gandhi won the Wanad constituency by a margin of more than 365,000 votes in the Lok Sabha elections held in April-May this year. Earlier, in 2019, he won by a margin of over 4 lakh votes.
Priyanka Gandhi has got almost 6 lakh votes so far. Veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) leader Satyen Mokari is in second place with around 2 lakh votes, while BJP's Navya Haridas is in third place with around 1 lakh votes. A total of 16 candidates participated in this by-election in Wanad constituency.
Rahul Gandhi was elected from this seat for the first time in 2019. Seva's Rahul lost in Amethi, the seat vacated by his mother. However, in the last election of 2024, he won from two constituencies – Wanad and Rae Bareli. The Rae Bareli seat also fell vacant after his mother Sonia Gandhi quit.
Rahul Gandhi and his mother, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, have been actively campaigning for Priyanka Gandhi for the past month and were aiming for victory by a margin of over 5 lakh votes. To garner public support, Rahul Gandhi told his sister to make Wanad a top tourist destination if she becomes MP. While campaigning for Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi also said that his doors will always be open for the people of Vanad.
