A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck a region of western China near Nepal on Tuesday, killing at least 96 people. It is one of the country's deadliest earthquakes in recent years.

In May 2008, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake in southwestern Sichuan province killed nearly 90,000 people. The collapse of schools and other buildings precipitated a long effort to rebuild with sustainable building materials at the time.
