9 top military officers have been dismissed in Israel. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir said that these officers had failed to stop the Hamas attack. More than 1200 Israeli people were killed in this attack on October 7, 2023.
There were demonstrations in Israel on Sunday regarding the security lapse and impartial investigation regarding the Hamas attack. At least 5 lakh people participated in it. After this, the pressure on the government to dismiss these officers had increased.
IDF Chief Zamir called these officers for a meeting on Sunday and announced their dismissal. During this period many officers were also reprimanded. Jamir said that they will also take decisions against the commanders on the basis of the expert’s investigation report.
Most of the officers have already left the job
However, most of the dismissed officers have already left the army. The officers who have been reprimanded will continue to work at their current posts till the completion of their tenure.
After his decision, the IDF Chief issued a statement saying – It is not easy to take such decisions, because they affect people whom I respect a lot and who have devoted their entire lives to the security of the country.
He further said that I have fought battles with them for decades. Despite this, I have the duty to take responsibility. We do not choose these decisions ourselves but as commanders we have to take them.

The IDF Chief further said that if we do not fix responsibility, people’s trust in the system will decrease. This trust is the foundation of our fight, our victory and the defense of the country.
Jamir also said that the officers who have been dismissed or reprimanded are among our best commanders. All of them have given a large part of their lives for the IDF and Israel. Many of these have played a direct role in many of the IDF’s military successes over the past two years.
