Imran supporters protesting in Pakistan.
Today, supporters of jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan are protesting across the country on his demand. Imran had given a message on 13 November, in which he had asked his supporters to demonstrate across the country on Sunday 24 November. Imran had described this demonstration as the final call.
Imran's party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and supporters are protesting with three demands. The first demand is that Imran Khan and PTI workers should be released soon. Apart from this, accepting the results of the elections held in 2024 and withdrawing the 26th Constitutional Amendment Act which reduces the power of the courts passed in the Pakistani Parliament.
After Imran Khan's announcement, an alert was issued in Pakistan on Friday itself. Mobile and internet facilities have been suspended in many areas of the capital Islamabad. Those taking part in the protest have been warned of arrest. The main roads leading to the capital Islamabad have been blocked.
Khan has announced the protest when Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko is coming to Pakistan a day later on 25 November. Earlier today his delegation will reach Pakistan.
Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi took stock of the security arrangements in Islamabad on 23 November.
Khan said – join the protest or leave the party Announcing the protest, Imran Khan told the supporters – You have to decide whether you want to live in martial law or freedom. Imran asked PTI workers to join the protest on November 24 or leave the party.
PTI also issued a statement saying that a march will start towards Islamabad on November 24. Since September, Imran Khan's supporters have been protesting at some level or the other for his release. After the announcement of Imran Khan's protest, Pakistan's Shahbaz Sharif government has made preparations to stop it.
Public meetings have been banned in the capital Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Punjab province. The main roads leading to the capital Islamabad have been blocked with 1200 containers. Apart from 6,325 personnel of Islamabad Police, 21,500 personnel of other armies have been deployed to stop the protest.
6000 anti-riot police personnel have also been deployed in Rawalpindi.
In Pakistan, routes through containers have been half closed. Security guards have also been deployed.
More than 100 cases against Khan
More than 100 cases are pending against Imran Khan. The local court of Islamabad had convicted him in the Toshakhana case on August 5, 2023. After this, he was arrested from his house in Zaman Park, Islamabad and sent to jail. He was later convicted in 2 more cases. According to the English newspaper Dawn, if Imran comes out of jail, he will raise the demand for re-election in Pakistan.
Imran's Tehreek-e-Insaf party could not officially participate in the general elections held this year. In a post on Imran Khan's X (Twitter) account on July 5, the general elections held on February 8 this year were described as fake. In such a situation, neither the Shahbaz government nor the army would want Khan to be released at any cost.
Won maximum seats despite being in jail
General elections were held in Pakistan on 8 February. Before this, Khan was convicted in 3 consecutive cases one after the other. Due to this he was not able to participate in the elections. His party symbol was snatched away before the elections. All the party leaders had contested the elections as independents. Despite this, supporters of Khan's party PTI got 93 out of 342 seats in the National Assembly of Pakistan. However, Pakistan Muslim League and Pakistan Peoples Party together formed the government. Shahbaz Sharif became the Prime Minister.
