Jai Bhattacharya has been nominated by Donald Trump to be the director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
In America, newly elected President Donald Trump is appointing important posts for his government. Some people of Indian origin have also got a place in it. Trump has decided to appoint Indian-origin physician and economist Dr. Jai Bhattacharya as the director of the National Institute of Health (NIH). Jai Bhattacharya will be responsible for the country's leading medical research institute.
As director of NIH, Bhattacharya will oversee 27 institutions. These institutions work to prepare vaccines and develop new medicines for epidemics.
Bhattacharya gave information about this by posting on X. Bhattacharya said –
I am honored to be chosen by President Donald Trump to be the director of. We will reform America's scientific institutions so they can be trusted again and better use science to make America healthy again.
Bhattacharya is a professor of health policy at Stanford University and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economics Research.
Jai had said- Corona should be allowed to spread Jai Bhattacharya was born in Kolkata in 1968. He earned his MD degree from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1997 and his PhD in Economics in 2000.
Bhattacharya is one of the three main authors of the 'Great Barrington Manifesto'. This manifesto was issued in 2020 during the Corona period. It was said that the virus should be allowed to spread among healthy people. By doing this, natural immunity can be developed against the virus.
Two other authors of this manifesto are Scott Atlas and Alex Azar. Atlas was an advisor to Trump during his first term. At the same time, Azar was the Health Secretary during the Trump tenure. However, these writers were criticized a lot at that time.
Bhattacharya will work with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Bhattacharya, 56, will work closely with Robert F Kennedy Jr. Trump appointed Kennedy Jr. as Health Minister a few days ago.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is the nephew of John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States. His father Robert F. Kennedy was Attorney General. Kennedy is also the founder of the Waterkeeper Alliance, the world's largest clean water advocacy group.
Robert has expressed gratitude to Trump on Bhattacharya's appointment. Robert said –

Trump has recently handed over the responsibility of the Health Ministry to Robert Kennedy Jr.

He had opposed the government's decision to make masks and lockdown mandatory. He had also opposed the government's policy making vaccination mandatory.
He had said that people are facing problems because of the vaccination policy of the government. People who have not got vaccinated are being prevented from going to workplaces. Because of this, the people of the country are losing confidence in the health system.
His statements were criticized by many health experts, including the World Health Organization. But, some people who had previously been in the Trump administration had supported Bhattacharya's statements.
Recently, Bhattacharya has commented on X on scientists leaving the X platform for the alternative site 'BlueSky'. He calls BlueSky 'his little echo chamber'.
Have faced restrictions on social media
Bhattacharya also faced restrictions on social media due to his views. He was a complainant in a case in the Supreme Court. They alleged that federal officials have unfairly suppressed conservative views on social media in their efforts to combat misinformation. In that case, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Joe Biden administration.
Later, after Elon Musk purchased Twitter, he was called to the company's headquarters to investigate how his views on social media were limited.
