Dishanayak's party wins the elections in Sri Lanka

The National People's Power (NPP) coalition of left-wing President Anura Kumara Dishanayek has won a landslide victory in Sri Lanka's early parliamentary elections. The election was held on Thursday (November 14), just seven weeks after the new president was sworn in. Indian media NDTV reported this news on Friday, according to the French news agency AFP.

Dishanayek won the presidential election held last September. He then promised to fight corruption and recover stolen assets.

NPP got two-thirds majority in this year's direct elections. The party won 137 out of 196 seats.

However, local media speculates that the NPP's number of seats in the 225-member parliament will exceed 150 if more seats are distributed under the proportional seat distribution system.

196 MPs are directly elected out of 225 seats in the Sri Lankan Parliament. And the rest are nominated by the political parties on the basis of proportional representation.

8 thousand 880 candidates contested this election in Sri Lanka. And the number of voters is more than two and a half million. About 65 percent of voters participated in this vote on Thursday.

The NPP, which won an absolute majority in this year's elections, won only three seats in the 2020 parliamentary elections.
