Death toll rises to 12 in floods in Thailand and Malaysia


The death toll from the worst floods in decades in southern Thailand and northern Malaysia has risen to at least 12. The authorities informed this information on Saturday. Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated to safety in the last three days as the water level rises. British news agency Reuters reported this news.

According to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, about 534,000 families have been affected by the floods in southern Thailand. Thousands of people have taken shelter in 200 temporary shelters in the affected areas.

Chana district of Songkhla province has been affected by worst floods in 50 years. Video footage showed drowned people being carried away from their homes by trucks.

Another video shows rescuers carrying a child from the roof of a flood-damaged house in Sateng Nok district of Yala province on Saturday.

According to the National Disaster Command Center, floods in neighboring Malaysia have affected about 139,000 people in nine states. Three people have died since Friday.

Thailand's Meteorological Department said more heavy rain is expected in several areas of southern Thailand on Saturday. A flash flood warning has been issued in these areas that have already flooded.

Six typhoons hit the neighboring Philippines in November. It caused great destruction in the country.
