Chinese defense minister Dong Jun has been investigated for corruption. A report by the British media The Financial Times on Wednesday (November 27) said that the incident has caused a stir at the top level of the country's People's Liberation Army (PLA). British news agency Reuters reported this.
According to the Financial Times, former and current officials of the United States, Dong Jun is the third defense minister to be investigated for corruption.
Reuters has contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Defense of China regarding the matter. Authorities did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A massive anti-corruption drive has been launched in the PLA since last year. Under this, nine PLA generals and at least four aerospace defense industry executives have so far been removed from the country's legislative assembly.
Former PLA Navy Chief Dong Jun was appointed Defense Minister in December 2023. His predecessor, Li Shangfu, was ousted after only seven months in office.
During a meeting of defense ministers in Laos last week, Dong Jun refused to meet with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. He cited US Taiwan policy as the reason. The Pentagon chief on Wednesday called June's decision regrettable.
