Bangladesh and Pakistani delegation met. Foreign Secretaries of both countries also met.

Foreign Secretary level conversation was held between Bangladesh and Pakistan on Thursday after 15 years. During this time Bangladesh raised many unresolved issues. Bangladeshi Foreign Secretary Mohammad Jashim Uddin demanded a formal apology from Pakistan for the atrocities of 1971.

Bangladesh said that when the two countries were the same in 1971, Pakistan should pay $ 4.3 billion (Rs 36 thousand crore or 52 thousand crore taka) from the joint property of the then. Along with this, during the cyclone in 1970, one should also pay $ 200 million (about 2400 million taka) to help Bangladesh (then East Pakistan).

The issue of return of 3 lakh 'Biharis' also raised

Bangladesh also raised the issue of the return of more than 3 lakh stranded Pakistanis living in Dhaka camps. In Bangladesh, they are called 'Bihari'. These are basically Urdu -speaking Muslim migrants, who settled in East Pakistan (Bangladesh) from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh after India's partition in 1947.

After the 1971 Bangladesh liberation struggle, these people showed loyalty to West Pakistan, due to which they faced discrimination and harassment in Bangladesh. They were taken revenge as a 'pro -Pakistan'. Their properties were confiscated, and they faced violence, rape, and murders.

The Indian Army and Red Cross then set up several temporary relief camps at Dhaka and other places for their safety. Since the independence of Bangladesh, millions of people have been living in bad conditions in relief camps, nor has Pakistan adopted them nor Bangladesh has given them full citizenship.

After the fall of Sheikh Hasina government in August last year, the relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan have come close. Since then, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus have met twice. The two met in September during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York and during the D-8 Summit in Cairo in December.

After this meeting, Bangladesh made visa rules easier for Pakistani citizens and direct shipping between the two countries started. There was no direct maritime trade between Pakistan and Bangladesh before the Yunus government.

Earlier, Pakistani goods were sent through ports of third countries like Sri Lanka, Malaysia or Singapore to transport goods to Bangladesh. Because of this, both time and cost used to grow. After the interim government came to power in August 2024, Bangladesh removed import sanctions on Pakistani goods and allowed direct shipping.
