At least 24 killed in suicide bombing at railway station in Pakistan

At least 24 people were killed and 46 injured in a suicide blast at a railway station in Quetta, Pakistan.

This information was reported by Pakistani media Dawn citing local divisional commissioner Hamza Shafqat.

The incident comes as eight people, including five children, were killed in a bomb blast near a girls' school and hospital in Balochistan's Mastung district a week ago.

The number of terrorist attacks in Pakistan's Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces has increased in the last one year.

Quetta Divisional Commissioner Hamza Shafqat confirmed that it was a suicide attack.

He also said that the administration has written to the railway authorities to suspend the train movement.

A banned armed group called the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Pakistan Railways announced the resumption of train services between Quetta and Peshawar on October 11, after a one-and-a-half-month shutdown.

Train services were suspended in various parts of the country from August 26 after a major railway bridge between Kalpur and Mach was destroyed in an explosion. This was also part of a planned attack by the BLA.

Divisional Commissioner Shafqat while talking to Geo News urged the public to donate blood for the injured.

Earlier, Quetta Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Mohammad Baloch said that around 100 people were present during the incident. He saw this scene in the video footage.

He also said that the Zafar Express train was preparing to leave the platform for Peshawar at the time of the explosion.

Police and security forces have reached the spot, Balochistan government spokesman Shahid Rind said.

Rind said the bomb disposal team is collecting evidence from the scene and a report on the incident has been sought.

The government official also said that a state of emergency has been declared in the hospitals there.
