Karimganj is one of the three districts of Barak Valley known as Bengali speaking area. This time the BJP government changed the name of this district. Chief Minister Himanta Vishwasharma said on Tuesday that the name of this district has been changed. The name of Karimganj district is being changed to pay tribute to the universal poet Rabindranath Tagore. And this has been informed by the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Vishwasharma in a press conference.
The decision was taken in the Assam cabinet meeting on Tuesday. And after that the Chief Minister of Assam posted it on the X handle. Chief Minister Himanta Vishwasharma has announced that the state's Karimganj district is being renamed as Shribhoomi to honor Rabindranath Tagore. Himanta Vishwasharma writes in X Handel, 'More than 100 years ago, poet Rabindranath Tagore described the modern Karimganj district of Assam as 'Sribhumi'—the land of Mother Lakshmi. Today the Assam Cabinet has fulfilled this long-standing demand of our people.'
