The mummy was kept inside a wooden chamber carved in the shape of a falcon, the Emirates-based The National reported on Tuesday. An Austrian collector bought it from an exhibition in France in the 1980s.
The mummified falcon was wrapped in a linen cloth inside a 55 cm long wooden shell. The bird's body was completely intact inside the shell. A later X-ray image also showed the mummified bird's skeleton intact. And its wings are folded like a human mummy. However, seeing the right wing in a broken state, the researchers believe that it was kept for sacrificial purposes.
The period that the mummy represents is the 26th Dynasty of Egypt. This dynasty ruled from the 6th to the 7th century BC.
The lid of the wooden shell in which the mummy was kept is carved with a falcon resembling the ancient Egyptian god Horus, The National reported. This hawk-faced deity was worshiped as a representative of healing, protection, the sun and the sky.
It is known that Abu Dhabi Art is held every November under the patronage of Sheikh Khaled bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. Local and international artists participated in this art exhibition. This exhibition will run from November 20 to 24 at Abu Dhabi's Manarat Al-Sadia.
