A Singapore court has found 73-year-old Indian national Balasubramaniam Ramesh accused of molesting four women on a Singapore Airlines flight. According to The Straits Times, Balasubramaniam Ramesh may face up to 21 years in jail in this case. On Monday, seven charges of molestation were framed against him in the district court.
Balasubramaniam molested four women between 3.15 am and 5.30 pm on November 18. Of these, one woman was molested four times and three other women were molested once each.
Three years jail for every molestation
According to the report, the women were molested at different times. Under Singapore law, each count of molestation is punishable with a prison term of up to three years, a fine, or caning, or any combination thereof. Balasubramaniam cannot be caned because he is more than 50 years old.
The court report does not reveal whether these women were passengers or staff members. Balasubramaniam is likely to be sentenced on December 13.
Molestation punishable with jail, fine or caning
In Singapore, matters related to crimes against women are taken very seriously. There is a provision of 3 years imprisonment for molesting women. If the victim is below 14 years of age, the accused is punished with jail for up to five years, fine or caning.
