35 people were killed and 43 injured in a car attack in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai. According to the local police on Tuesday (November 12), the accident took place inside the Zhuhai Sports Center on Monday evening. French news agency AFP reported.
At first, the police said that several people were injured in the accident. However, the video of the incident was removed from social media. Police on Tuesday called the incident a 'serious and brutal attack' and put the death toll at 35.
According to a police statement, Fan, a 62-year-old driver, drove a small SUV through the gates of the Zhuhai Sports Center and plowed into people exercising on the inner road of the center. At the time of the incident, the police found Fan injured inside the car, stabbing himself with a knife. He was immediately arrested and sent to the hospital.
According to the police, Fan is currently in a coma and could not be questioned due to injuries to his neck and other parts of his body.
Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered all-out efforts to treat the injured and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice and punished, the country's official Xinhua news agency reported.
Note that China's largest airshow is now being held in Zhuhai. The country's civil and military aircraft are being exhibited.
