The work of installing trap cameras has started to know the number of tigers in the Sundarbans forest of India. Installation of cameras has started from Thursday.
The Forest Department of West Bengal has informed that until November 26, cameras will be installed in various places of the Sundarbans to determine the number of tigers. There will be trap cameras in Sundarbans for 45 days. Then they will be collected between January 6 and January 12 next year. Apart from this, 40 trap cameras will also be installed in the forest under the Matla range.
Nisha Goswami, District Forest Officer of South 24 Parganas, said that the number of trap cameras has been increased this year compared to last year. About 1200 trap cameras will be installed in four ranges of Sundarbans. These are Sajnekhali, Gosaba Bagna and Vidya ranges.
Incidentally, India and Bangladesh together have Sundarban forest area covering an area of 10 thousand 813 square kilometers. Of which India has an area of 4,726 square kilometers, i.e. 38 percent is within India. The rest is in Bangladesh. These cameras will be installed all over the Sundarbans forest in India. Forest department personnel have already been trained on how to install the cameras.
Besides, 140 trap cameras will be installed in Raidighi Range, Ramganga Range under South 24 Parganas Forest Division. Where more tigers are roaming in the forest can be easily recorded through this camera. Forest officials say, in many cases, tigers do not come to an area for 30 days. Keeping that in mind, it has been decided to install the trap camera for 45 days. As a result, the movement of the tiger will be noticed. These cameras are sophisticated and automatic. These will have a battery life of up to 45 days.
Meanwhile, the Sundarban Tiger Project forest will be closed for tourists on Fridays from December 1 for tiger enumeration work. However, once the work is done, this rule will no longer be followed.
According to the forest department news, movement of tigers, running to catch prey, rest of mother tiger with cubs – all will be caught on camera. A lot of unknown information can come up with it. However, not only the tiger will be captured by this camera, but like the last time, the pictures of other animals including mechho cat, wild boar will also be captured, according to the forest department.
