At least 10 people have been killed in a fire at a nursing home in Spain. Many others were injured in this incident. Local authorities said that the condition of two of them is critical. Al-Jazeera reported this news with reference to the Spanish local newspaper El Pais on Friday.
The fire broke out at the 'Jardins de Villafranca' nursing home, 18 miles from the city of Zaragoza in northeastern Aragon, at 5 a.m. local time today. Firefighters brought the fire under control in about 2 hours.
The mayor of Villafranca de Ebro, Volga Ramírez, told reporters that the death was believed to be due to suffocation due to heavy smoke from the fire. The cause of the fire is not yet known. However, the fire was confined to one room.
The nursing home opened in 2008, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais. Recently it was specialized for elderly people with mental health problems. There were 82 people there at the time of the incident.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez took to social media to express his condolences, writing that he was 'saddened and saddened'.
The fire came days before devastating floods in the eastern Valencia region killed more than 200 people and destroyed thousands of homes. It is the worst natural disaster in Spain's recent history.
