Most older generation computers do not run modern operating systems. However, older PCs can be run smoothly by installing a smaller operating system, KolibrioOS. This operating system is written in X86 assembly code, so it can run on computers that are decades old. It can even be installed from a floppy disk.
The ColibriOS operating system was developed in 2004 under the 'MinuteOS' project. This operating system is available in 32 bit version. But for systems that use it, this 32-bit version is sufficient.
The computer requires an i586 CPU, VESA video card to run this operating system. Surprisingly, this system works well on older PCs and applications take a long time to load. It also takes less time to boot.
In a recent video, YouTuber Michael MZ booted ColibrioOS in minutes from a 3.5-inch floppy disk and in about five seconds from CD-ROM on older hardware.
However, when running from a floppy disk, the number of software is limited. The CD version contains more than 50 games. These range from classic 2D Gems games to 3D shooter games such as Wolfstein 3D, Doom and Quack games.
Apart from games, it also contains essential apps. Eg: Netsurf web browser text editor, DOSBox emulators. But that browser can handle nothing but simple website rendering. It doesn't support modern HTML5, let alone video streaming.
But ColibriOS is not designed for website browsers. It's designed for general productivity tasks running older PCs. And it can be used for some older gaming.
However, this operating system has many customization features, although the operating system cannot upload its own wallpaper, but many colors and textures can be chosen. Different theming can be defined, where colors can be selected for different elements such as buttons and title bars. It has a macOS-like dock instead of a Windows-like taskbar.
However, the operating system is very common with Intel, 3.com and Realtek drivers available.
