About a year later, Meta will start showing political content arbitrarily on Instagram and the Threads app. The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, announced this information in an announcement. As Meta has recently changed its content moderation policy, the organization will no longer control such content in the two apps.
Mosseri said there will now be three levels of political content viewing options — low, standard (which will be the default) and high.
Last year, Instagram and the Threads app began restricting the display of political content unless users were interested. The organization took this initiative to prevent the spread of rumors and false information by using social media in the elections of different countries.
In a blog post, Mosseri said it is impossible to define what content is political and what is non-political.
This change will be seen for the first time in the United States this week. This change will be seen in different parts of the world in the coming weeks.
Last Tuesday, the parent organization of these two popular social media apps made some changes in the policy of promoting hate speech and content. Mark Zuckerberg is believed to have brought this change to appease the newly elected US President Donald Trump. Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that Meta will launch a Community Notes model that ditches third-party fact-checkers from Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, which emulates the principles of X (the old Twitter). In addition, Mater's president of global affairs, Nick Clegg, has resigned. He was replaced by Republican Joel Kaplan.
