Honda to mass-produce solid-state batteries for electric vehicles For this, the company has set up a production center in Japan. Here the design of the battery will be tested. This plan will help in the development of low cost and durable batteries.
A solid state battery is a battery technology that uses solid electrodes and a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid or polymer gel electrolyte. Lithium-ion batteries use liquid or polymer gels.
Solid state batteries are difficult for many companies to manufacture. Because the process of producing such batteries in large quantities is quite complicated. This technology uses dry active material instead of the liquid electrolyte used in lithium-ion batteries. As a result, the battery is more powerful and has a longer life. It requires a completely new production process to successfully manufacture it.
A few companies are actively working on solid state battery production, including Volkswagen-backed Quantumscape, Nissan and Factorial. Companies are experimenting with semi-solid state batteries suitable for Dodge Charger vehicles.
Honda said the company has built a new 27,000 square meter pilot production facility in Sakura City, Japan. Honda is reducing the time required to manufacture a single unit of battery. The site has full-size machinery, which is divided between three buildings. The first building will be used for cathode formation and cell assembly, the second for anode formation and the third for electrolyte activation and module assembly.
Honda says its battery production process will be three times faster than normal cell batch processing. The company will start battery production in January.
Honda prepares solid state technology for mass production in 2025
Company CEO Toshihiro Mibe said solid-state batteries will be an important component for creating affordable electric vehicles (EVs).
Honda is trying to stay at the top position in the EV market. Honda's electric car Prolog SUV is doing quite well in the US. In 2025, Honda will unveil a new production car at the Consumer Electronics event. LG battery will be used in this car. Meanwhile, Honda and LG are jointly building a battery factory in Ohio, USA.
